SEO for Criminal Lawyers: First Page for What?
Almost every criminal lawyer has been approached by an SEO company promising first-page rankings on Google.
The pitch rarely changes. Get to the first page. Get more traffic. Get more clients.
It sounds reasonable. People charged with a crime search for lawyers online. If they cannot find you, they cannot call you.
SEO matters. Every criminal lawyer should have a website that Google can find, understand and show to potential clients.
But “first page of Google” is not a strategy.
First page for what?
Rainmark is not an SEO company. We work exclusively in criminal law marketing, and we have been doing that since 1997. This article is here to help criminal lawyers understand what they are buying before they hire someone to improve their rankings.
It also explains why the ranking itself is not the point.
What SEO Actually Does
SEO is the work done to help your website appear in Google without paying Google for every click.
That does not make it free. Someone still has to research the searches, improve the website, create the content, fix technical problems and track what happens.
It also helps to understand what Google’s first page looks like.
Paid advertisements often appear near the top. Google may also show map results connected to local business profiles. The unpaid website listings are the organic results.
SEO is mainly used to improve visibility in the organic results. Local SEO focuses on map results and other searches influenced by location.
This distinction matters. An SEO company may tell you that your website ranks first organically. That may be true, but advertisements and map listings could still appear above it.
The ranking is real. Its value depends on whether the right people see it, visit the website and call.
Not Every Search Is Worth the Same
Someone searching “DUI lawyer near me” may need a lawyer now.
Someone searching “What does DUI mean?” is more likely looking for information.
Either person could reach a lawyer’s website, but the first search shows a much stronger intention to hire.
This is known as search intent. A good SEO campaign pays attention to it.
An SEO company can bring thousands of visitors to a website without producing many useful enquiries. The traffic may come from students, job seekers, other lawyers or people looking for free information.
Search volume can be misleading too. A low-volume search may still be valuable if it produces the right kind of enquiry. A popular search may be worth very little if the visitors have no intention of hiring a lawyer.
That is why the number of rankings does not tell you whether an SEO campaign is working. You need to know which searches produced those rankings and what happened after people reached the website.
A report can be accurate and still tell you nothing useful.
What Should SEO for Criminal Lawyers Include?
Some SEO work is technical. The website needs to load properly, work on a phone and have a structure Google can follow. Important pages need to be indexed. Broken links, duplicate content and other problems need to be corrected.
That work matters, but it is only the foundation. Technical SEO gives nobody a reason to hire the lawyer.
The website also needs useful pages about the work the lawyer actually does.
A domestic assault page should answer the concerns of someone facing a domestic assault charge. An impaired driving page should explain that problem clearly and help the reader understand what to do next.
The content does not need to answer every possible legal question. It needs to show that the lawyer understands the charge, handles that type of work and may be worth calling.
The language must also match the way people search.
A person may search for a “DUI lawyer” even though the Canadian charge is impaired driving. Someone dealing with an administrative roadside suspension may search for an IRS lawyer in Alberta or Saskatchewan and an IRP lawyer in British Columbia.
A criminal impaired driving charge and an administrative roadside suspension are not the same proceeding. They may arise from the same traffic stop, but the person needs information about the actual problem.
An SEO company working for a criminal lawyer should understand that difference. Swapping “IRP” for “IRS” and changing the province on a template page is not the same as understanding the law.
Location pages require the same care. An impaired driving page written for Calgary should not be copied, given a new city name and published as a Toronto page. The law may be different. The process may be different. The person searching may be dealing with a different problem.
This is where SEO for criminal defence lawyers differs from generic legal SEO. The technical foundations may be the same, but the search language, legal issues and client behaviour are not.
Local visibility matters as well. A complete and accurate Google Business Profile can help a lawyer appear in map results. The lawyer’s location, business information, relevance and reviews may all affect how that profile performs.
Links from other websites can also help, but not every link has value. A link from a legitimate legal organization, local publication or respected directory has a reason to exist. Hundreds of cheap links placed on unrelated websites may look impressive in a report and do very little for the lawyer.
Good SEO combines sound technical work, useful information, local relevance and legitimate authority. It is not one trick.
Getting Found Does Not Mean Getting Hired
A ranking gives the lawyer a chance to be considered. That is all.
The person still has to notice the result, visit the website and find a reason to call.
Many criminal lawyer websites lose the person at this point. They make the same claims as every other lawyer.
Experienced. Aggressive. Dedicated. Fighting for your rights.
Every site says it, so it means nothing. It often helps to explain, in your own words, why you became a criminal lawyer and what that means for the clients you represent.
A person facing a charge wants to know whether the lawyer handles that type of case, practises in the right location and understands what is at stake. The website needs to answer those questions quickly.
Making contact should also be easy. On a phone, the telephone number should be obvious and clickable. Forms should be short. A worried person should not have to search the website for a way to ask for help.
Then somebody has to answer.
Criminal law clients do not always leave a message and wait. They may call the next lawyer they find. A lawyer can spend thousands of dollars improving visibility and lose the opportunity because nobody answered the phone properly.
Being the better lawyer does not mean you get the call. If they find someone else first, they may never find you.
SEO gets someone to the door. It cannot answer the phone for you.
How Can a Criminal Lawyer Tell Whether SEO Is Working?
Start with the searches.
Find out which terms the website ranks for and whether they relate to the work the lawyer wants. Then look at the pages attracting visitors and the calls or forms those pages produce.
An impression means Google displayed the page. It does not mean anybody noticed it. A click means someone visited, not that the visitor needed a lawyer. Even a call may come from outside the lawyer’s market or involve work the lawyer does not want.
The useful measurement is the connection between the search, the website visit, the enquiry and the retained file.
Your SEO company cannot know which calls became clients unless your office tracks that information and shares it. If nobody closes that loop, both sides are guessing.
Traffic and rankings still matter. They help explain what is happening. They should not be confused with the final result.
What Should You Ask an SEO Company?
Do not accept “We will get you on the first page” as a complete answer.
Before hiring an SEO company, ask:
- Which searches will you target, and why do they matter?
- Who will write and legally review the content?
- How will you measure calls and retained files?
- How do you obtain links to my website?
- Who owns the website, content and accounts if we part ways?
Ask to see pages the company has created for other lawyers. Read them. If the content is thin or legally wrong, ask why you should expect your content to be different.
You should also know whether the company works with competing criminal lawyers in the same city. SEO is different from paid search, but you are still entitled to know whether similar content and the same strategy are being used for lawyers pursuing the same clients.
Be careful with guarantees.
No SEO company controls Google. It cannot honestly guarantee first place, a fixed number of calls or a steady flow of retained clients.
There is also no honest answer to how long SEO will take without examining the website and the market. A new site in Toronto faces a different task from an established site in a smaller city.
The company can guarantee the work it will perform. It can explain the plan, complete the work, measure what happens and report the results honestly.
That is what you should be paying for.
Where SEO Fits in Criminal Law Marketing
SEO is one way to become visible. It is not the whole marketing system, and marketing is crucial for criminal lawyers who want a steady flow of the right clients.
Google Ads can create visibility quickly for specific searches, but the lawyer pays for each click and the traffic stops when the campaign stops. SEO usually takes longer. A useful page may continue attracting visitors without a payment for each click, but rankings can rise and fall.
Referrals, directories, reviews and reputation also matter. A person may receive a referral and then search the lawyer’s name. Someone else may find the lawyer through an advertisement and later return through an organic result.
The client does not care which marketing channel gets the credit. The client is trying to decide whom to call — a decision shaped by the same fundamentals covered in The Knockout Lesson in Great Marketing.
SEO should be judged by the part it plays in that decision. Does it help the right people find the lawyer, understand the practice and make contact?
The Point of SEO
SEO has a legitimate place in criminal law marketing.
A sound website with useful content can help a criminal lawyer become visible for searches that matter. It can answer questions, build credibility and create opportunities that would otherwise go elsewhere.
But rankings are not clients. More traffic is not automatically better traffic, and an impressive report is not proof that the marketing is working.
Rainmark exists to help criminal lawyers become more visible to the people searching for them. We do that through Google Ads and JustCharged. We do not sell SEO, but it is part of the same visibility problem. Criminal lawyers should understand how it works before paying someone else to do it.
The purpose of SEO is to help the right people find the lawyer when they need one.
If your SEO report and your phone records tell different stories, believe your phone records.
You can’t defend clients you never meet.
